1968 thereabout, it became necessary to form an Association with a Code of Conduct for its members and a board to control and regulate the practice of the Profession in Ghana.
On 28th May 1971, the Secretary of the Association of Ghana Medical Laboratory Technologists, Mr. E. K. Addo, was mandated to write a memorandum to the Ministry of Health requesting among other things;
- The establishment of a medical laboratory board to control and regulate the practice of medical laboratory technology in Ghana.
- School for the training of medical laboratory technologists and
- Review the salaries of technologists to befit their status as professionals.
On 25th July 1973 the Association of Ghana Medical Laboratory Technologists (AGMLT) was registered in accordance with the Professional Bodies Registration Decree, NRCD 143 of 1973 with a membership of fifty (50) Technologists and was inaugurated by Major A.H. Selormey, the commissioner for Health on Saturday, 13th October 1973.
The chairman for the occasion was Prof. W.N. Laing (Associate Professor of Pathology, University of Ghana Medical School,Korle-Bu, Accra. At a Congress held at UGMS Auditorium, Korle Bu on 8th October, 1988, a resolution was passed and the name was changed to the Association of Ghana Medical Laboratory Scientists.
The name AGMLT was therefore changed to the “ASSOCIATION OF GHANA MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENTISTS (AGMLS) at the Registrar-General’s Department on 31st May 1989.
Mr. David Asante-Adjei with the support of Mr. Philip Ofori Mensah, the Chief Delegate at the General Assembly of Delegates(GAD) 2000 of the International Association of Medical Laboratory Technologists (IAMLT) in Canada moved for the name change of the Association of Ghana Medical Laboratory Scientists (AGMLS) to “GHANA ASSOCIATION OF BIOMEDICAL SCIENTISTS (GABMS)” in line with current advancement in Medical Laboratory Technology which members unanimously voted for during the 3rd National Delegates Congress (NDC) of the AGMLS held at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi on 19th -21st September 2002.
At the 6th National Delegate Congress of the association, the name was reviewed and LABORATORY was inserted which now becomes ‘GHANA ASSOCIATION OF BIOMEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENTISTS (GABMLS) and the records updated thereupon at Registrar-General’s department on the 21st day of December 2010 with a registration number PB-2 .
This Association has since then been growing from strength to strength and presently has branches in all the 10 regions in Ghana.There are also various chapters of the association within the regional branches.
