GAMLS JOINS THE FIGHT AGAINST “GALAMSEY” IN GHANA

The Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS), the sole professional body for Medical Laboratory Professionals in Ghana having considered the negative social, economic, environmental, and health effects of illegal-mining, popularly known as “Galamsey” on the citizens of our dear nation fully declare our support for the campaign to stop the destructive effect of the practice. The radical and destructive impact of “galamsey” on Ghana’s beautiful ecological system and its attendant negative effects on our environment are not farfetched and require a concerted effort to stem.

As a profession that is actively responsible for the daily analysis of biological specimens for effective diagnosis, monitoring, surveillance and overall management of disease conditions, the negative health consequences and the pain caused by this menace is familiar to our membership who generate and report medical laboratory test reports on a daily basis for clients affected by this menace. A few of the health concerns directly related to this menace include Tuberculosis, Skin, Kidney, Liver disease conditions, and cancers due to dust particles and toxic effects of chemicals and heavy metal poisons (unsafe mining practices) consumed by persons in immediate or remote environs of affected areas.
